TAMPICO FIBER BROOM MAKING WORKSHOP

  • Creative Interchange @ THE JOINT 619 Marin Street Vallejo, CA, 94590 United States (map)

All around the world brooms have been used for the daily and ritual cleansing of our homes, work and sacred spaces for centuries and centuries.

In our industrialized era, traditional crafts like broom-making are being replaced by machine-made goods devoid of soul and artistry. As part of our ARTS & CRAFTS MOVEMENT SERIES, this workshop aims to revive the ancient art of broom-making.

Stephanie Brown, of La Negra Brooms, will teach you the skills to make your own functional and beautiful tampico fiber broom. Tampico is a soft-to-medium flexible plant fiber derived from yucca and agave cacti grown and processed in Mexico. This natural fiber makes excellent brooms and brushes for dusting and light sweeping.

Join us and create your own practical art piece to adorn your wall, use for cleaning or to give as a special handmade gift. Reconnect with age-old traditions while picking up a new sustainable craft skill. No experience necessary, although some manual dexterity is required. All tools and materials will be provided so no need to bring anything but your creative enthusiasm!

Let’s get creative!
